🥑 What is a Keto diet?

Updated this week

A keto diet (short for ketogenic diet) is a low-carbohydrate, high-fat eating plan designed to help your body use fat as its main source of energy instead of sugar.

🪄 How the Keto diet works

Normally, your body gets energy from carbohydrates, which are found in foods like bread, pasta, rice, and sugar.

When you eat carbs, your body turns them into glucose (a type of sugar) and uses it as fuel.

On a keto diet:

  • Carbohydrates are reduced

  • Fat intake is increased

  • The body is forced to look for a new energy source

As a result, your body starts burning fat instead of sugar.

⚡ What is Ketosis?

Ketosis is a natural metabolic state where:

  • Your body burns fat for energy

  • The liver produces ketones (small energy molecules made from fat)

  • Ketones replace glucose as the main fuel for the brain and body

This process can support:

  • Weight loss

  • Reduced cravings

  • More stable energy levels

How to know if you are in Ketosis

Being in ketosis means your body is primarily using fat for energy. You may notice:

  • Less hunger between meals

  • More consistent energy

  • Increased thirst or urination

  • Dry mouth or metallic taste

  • “Keto breath” (caused by ketones leaving the body)

These signs vary from person to person.

How to confirm Ketosis

Ketosis can be measured using:

  • Urine ketone strips (easy and affordable)

  • Blood ketone tests (more accurate)

With urine strips, a darker color usually means higher ketone levels.

❓ What to expect when starting Keto

When switching to keto, your body needs time to adapt.

During the first days or weeks, your metabolism is learning to use fat instead of sugar.

This adjustment phase is normal and temporary.
